Power outages, transformer blowouts and traffic gridlock are all part of a chaotic scene in downtown Vancouver today.

About 4,500 BC Hydro customers are without power in the area stretching from Beatty to Burrard and Hastings to Robson, roughly between Canada Place and Gastown. Numerous traffic lights are also out, and the outage has left a number buildings without electricity.

There are reports of a few people trapped in elevators. Waterfront Station has been evacuated, but SkyTrain and SeaBus passengers are being allowed in, as both services are still running. Bus service is being disrupted due to traffic lights not working at many intersections. [News1130]

A source for power outage information is the BC Hydro website. That came in handy last week when an area of South East False Creek (including the stations where John works) was without power for several hours in the afternoon, also shutting down work at construction sites at the Olympic Village.

I’m used to power outages, we used to have them almost monthly when I lived in a certain area of Surrey, but these are no run-of-the-mill blackouts as according to reports something pretty big happened this morning.

For all those without power (running off laptop battery or who have changed locations) make sure to unplug your computer so that when the power comes back on there’s no potential frying of circuits.

Update: 3:20pm from News1130: “Approximately 1,500 BC Hydro customers are still without power, in a grid from Smithe St. to the Burrard Inlet, and between Columbia St. & Burrard St. At one point around 4,500 customers were without power in the area stretching from Beatty to Burrard and Hastings to Robson.”

Update: 8:00am July 15 from News 1130: “It could be late tonight, or even tomorrow before all of downtown Vancouver has power restored after an underground electrical fire. 20% of the downtown core had power knocked out yesterday morning.”

This summer my baby sister (who is 18 months old) started taking swimming lessons at an indoor swimming pool. I think that all children should take swimming lessons - you never know when they’ll need those skills, and swimming is great exercise - but parents also need to be aware of the health risks associated with indoor pools. Chlorine byproducts contaminate the air above indoor swimming pools and have been linked to lung damage, asthma, and cancer. Indoor pools also increase humidity, which can lead to mold growth.

According to swimming.about.com, chlorinated indoor swimming pools can cause asthma, and swimmers using indoor swimming pools are more likely to develop asthma. Chlorine reacts with organic chemicals to form dangerous chemicals like nitrogen trichloride, aldehydes, halogenated hydrocarbons, chlorogorm, thrihalomethanes, and chloramines.

Trihalomethanes (THMs) are known carcinogens that have been linked to increased incidences of bladder and colon cancer, as well as miscarriages and stillbirths.

Chloramines increase the permeability of the lung epithelium. This same condition is associated with smoking cigarettes, and it makes breathing more difficult.

Dr. Simone Carbonnelle of the University of Louvain in Brussels has studied the effect of chlorine byproducts on the lungs and concludes: “Findings suggest that the increasing exposure to chlorine-based disinfectants used in swimming pools and their byproducts might be an unsuspected risk factor in the rising incidence of childhood asthma and allergic diseases.”

Chlorine byproducts are most concentrated in the air at the surface of the pool, and they’re most dangerous to young children. If you utilize an indoor pool, make sure that’s it’s well ventilated. Airflow above the surface of the pool helps to disperse the dangerous chemicals.

As a good rule of thumb, if you can smell a strong odor of chlorine, or if you experience a skin rash, irritated eyes, or difficulty breathing, then the indoor air at the pool is probably not safe to breathe.

INSULIN - INJECTION

COMMON BRAND NAME(S): Humulin, Iletin I NPH, Novolin

USES: Insulin is used to treat diabetes mellitus. Controlling high blood sugar helps preevnt heart disease, strokes, kidney disease, circulation problems, and blindness.

HOW TO USE: Insulin must be injected. Learn the proper way to inject insulin. Check the dose carefully. Clean the injection web site with rubbing alcohol. Change the injection web site daily to prevent skin bluges or pockets. Do not inject cold insulin. The insulin container you are currently using can be kept at room tempertaure. The length of time you can store it at room temp. depends on the product. Consult your pharmacist. Insuiln is frequently injected 30 minutes before a meal. Some inject at bedtime. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include: rash, itching, swelling, dizziness, trouble breathing. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

PRECAUTIONS: Tell your doctor if you have had allergic reactions, especially to beef, pork or human isnulin and of your medical history especially of: thyroid problems, kidney or liver disease, any current infection. Dosage adjustments may be required when you become ill, are under stress, or when quititng smoking. Consult your doctor if you catch a cold or the flu, become nauseated or if your blood glucose levels are high. Fat deposits can occur if injection web site is not rotated. DRUG INTERACTIONS: Before you use insulin, tell your dotcor of all prescription and nonprescription drugs you are taking especially: beta-blockers (acebutolol, atenolol, betaxolol, esmolol, metoprolol, carteolol, nadolol, penbutolol, pindolol, propranolol, timolol, bisoprolol), fenfluramine, MAO inhibitors (e.G., furazolidone, linezolid, phenelzine, selegiline, tranylcypromine), salicylates (aspirin-like compounds), dexfenfluramine, steroids (e.G., prednisone, hydrocortisone), birth control pills, sulfa antibiotics, water pills, ACE inhibitors, octreotide, isoniazid, niacin, estrogens, cold and allergy drugs, drugs that contain alcohol or sugar. Other medications can affect the action of insulin and can alter the results of urine tests for sugar or ketones. Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval.

OVERDOSE: If oevrdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptmos of overdose may include unconsciousness, seizures, muscle weakness, slow or shallow breathing, headache, vomiting, fever, diarrhea, shakiness, nervousness, fast heartbeat, hunger, or sweating.

NOTES: Do not shrae this medication with others. It is recommended you attend a diabetes education program to understand diabetes and all important aspects of its treatment including meals/diet, exercise, personal hygiene, medications and getting regular eye, foot and medical exams. Consult your doctor or pharmacist. Keep all medical appointments. Laboratory and/or medical tests (e.G., liver and kidney function tests, fsating blood glucose, hemoglobin A1c, complete blood counts) will be performed to monitor for side effects and response to therapy. The Big Septic Tank Disaster

Recently I was reminded of the septic tank problem we had about a year ago. It was a mess!

We had not been taking care of our septic system, just assuming that it would keep working forever. Unfortunately, we now know that is not true. We know it very well.

We had a full house, all rooms rented, when one of the staff reported a bad septic smell outside. We found a wet area where there never was one before, and it did not take long to realize that this was not a new mountain spring!

To solve the immediate problem, we called the biggest local porta-potty company and asked them to bring 5 on their fancy “executive” portable toilets…right away! These porta-potties are on a trailer, they have lights and even have sinks or lavatories with hot water. It took a few hours to get them delivered and parked, and we ran extension cords out to power them up.

Then we called the biggest local septic tank pumping company, American Septic Tank, and asked them to come pump the septic tank. They sent out two septic pumping trucks, the kind with filters so they do not add septic stench to the odor, and they got to work pumping the septic tank down. When they had this done the seep in the yard dried up and the bad smell went away.

It was quite an adventure for the staff, but we all worked together to get it done and keep the guests (fairly) happy.
