Odor Control News & Commentary

Similar to how every Wal-Mart in the world seems to look the same. I have noticed that they all smell the same. The fragrence is a unusual one I haven’t smelled at simallar stores such as K-Mart. If the aroma was a pleasent one it would be quite nice, However it’s not.

The moment you enter through those automatic sliding doors, and are carefully inspected by the “Wal-Mart Greeter” you notice the odor. It smells of dirty rubber, fecal chloroforms,  packing tape, dust, and some other things I can’t quite put my finger on. It could be that every time I enter the store someone decides to light off a fart, maybe the employees just smell bad.

I have developed a solution to all of Wal-Marts’ odor problems. Fortunately Wal-Mart being the massive Mart of everything, It sells Ferbreze.  Wal-Mart can create another job title, and make a nice name for it like “Odor Control Associate.” This person will travel to every  Wal-Mart in the world and kick a bottle Ferbreze until it explodes.

If we trust the Ferbreze Ads “Freshen Up, Don’t Cover up.” Then hopefully it will get rid of the smell. But there is a 86% chance that it will make the store smell like Lemon Breeze flavored Fecal Matter.

I guess there is no solution.

We already knew that select scientists were working up an advanced electronic nose, but now a team at Rockefeller University has apparently figured out a way to actually see smells. Supposedly, these gurus closely investigated fly larvae and found that sensing odors “in stereo” enabled flies to navigate to smells much more effectively than when only one olfactory organ was used. As they studied said phenomenon, the researchers used a “novel spectroscopic technique that exploited infrared light to create environments where they could see, control and precisely quantify the distribution of these smells.” Impressive though this may be, we still prefer the ole GPS method to locating our favorite fare, but beholding those delightful aromas could certainly help out in a pinch.

For a few minutes yesterday evening I had a very frightening situation.  I had been watching the TV in my room for a while as my mother was washing dishes in the kitchen.  At first I started smelling a very odd odor like something was burning.  I wasn’t really sure though so I kept on sitting there thinking it would go away.  Suddenly, I saw some smoke rising up from the front of my wheelchair so I hollered at my mother to come check it out.  However, she could smell the burning but didn’t realize that it was coming from my chair, and was checking everything else in my room besides my chair, thinking it was the heater or a power strip.  I was getting somewhat irritated with her because she didn’t realize I was talking about my wheelchair the whole time.  By the time she realized that it was my chair, the smoke had gone away.  About that time, my stepfather Dennis came to see what was going on, and they both started looking at my chair but couldn’t find out where it had been coming from.  I checked all of my wheelchair functions, and nothing had been affected.  The imminent danger seemed to have passed, but for the next couple of hours the room still had the terrible smell of burning wire.  Later that evening when I got out of my chair, Dennis made a more thorough inspection of the electrical system of my chair but didn’t find anything that appeared to have been burned.  Hopefully this isn’t something that comes back to haunt us in the near future.  I will be definitely talking to my wheelchair repair company this week to see if they have any ideas.
